Nicola Bellomo, an Italian diplomat, has announced that he has begun his duties as the new acting head of the European Union Delegation in Afghanistan.
Bellomo said on X on Monday, September 28, that he was taking up the position with “great pride” to represent the interests and values of the European Union in Afghanistan.
He succeeds Veronika Boskovic-Pohar, a Slovenian diplomat who had held the position since September 2024.
Bellomo previously headed the Africa Division at the European External Action Service and earlier served as the EU ambassador to Rwanda.
The EU Delegation in Afghanistan works on political, humanitarian, and development issues related to Afghanistan and monitors developments in the country.
The change comes as the European Union continues to maintain its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan while not recognizing the Taliban administration.
