The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that as winter approaches, thousands of families returning to Afghanistan urgently need adequate shelter, heating equipment and basic supplies.

OCHA emphasized in a post on X on Monday, October 12, that assistance to families in need must not be delayed.

“Winter does not wait, and humanitarian assistance should not be delayed either,” the agency said.

Earlier, the United Nations said it needed $529 million to support approximately 2.7 million Afghan migrants expected to return to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan between April and December 2026.

Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a report that 54 percent of individuals and families returning to Afghanistan are unable to meet their basic needs.

Afghanistan continues to face a widespread humanitarian crisis, poverty, food insecurity and the return of large numbers of migrants.

Funding shortages have also limited aid organizations’ ability to support vulnerable families.
