The organization People’s Tribunal on the War Crimes of Afghanistan has announced that public tribunal sessions for the women of Afghanistan will be held on Wednesday in Madrid, Spain.
Shaharzad Akbar, former chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and one of the organizers of the tribunal, wrote on her X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, October 7, that tomorrow marks the opening day of the People’s Tribunal for the Women of Afghanistan.
She added: “This is a first step, and we, the organizers, are above all indebted to the brave women who have brought the harrowing stories of Taliban repression to the world and courageously became the voice of truth.”
During this tribunal, prosecutors, victims, and judges will discuss the Taliban’s crimes and violations against the women and girls of Afghanistan.
According to the organizers, over the course of three days, an independent panel of judges will listen to the testimonies and statements of Afghan women and girls and will review the presented evidence.
The purpose of this review is to demonstrate how the Taliban’s policies and actions may constitute “gender persecution,” a practice recognized under international law as a crime against humanity.
