U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that officials from Lebanon and Israel are holding talks at the U.S. State Department.
Al Jazeera reported on Wednesday, June 3, that Rubio expressed hope that the negotiations would lead to the issuance of a joint statement and an action plan regarding Lebanon’s security path, separate from Hezbollah.
According to the report, Rubio made these remarks as a new round of Washington-mediated talks between the two sides was underway.
Rubio said the goal of the negotiations is to work toward ending the conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and reaching a lasting peace agreement.
He expressed hope that the outcome of these meetings would lead to a practical framework for reducing tensions in the region.
The current round of talks is said to have begun on Tuesday and was scheduled to conclude today.
