The housing crisis in Herat has intensified with the growing wave of returnees from Iran. Several of these returnees told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Monday, July 21, that homes that were just a few months ago rented for 5,000 Afghanis are now being rented for 15,000 and 20,000 Afghanis.
They added that this situation—caused by the lack of a legal ceiling on rent increases and the absence of a standardized system for contract registration—has primarily benefited landlords and harmed tenants. Many families have been forced to leave their residences and relocate to remote areas lacking basic services.
This is happening while the forced return of citizens of Afghanistan from Iran continues, and large numbers of them are heading directly to Herat after entering the country. Due to its shared border with Iran, Herat is currently under unprecedented population pressure and is facing a severe shortage of facilities.
