Local sources in Ghor say that a Shia cleric, along with several members of his family, has been arrested by the Taliban.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Wednesday, September 23, that Sheikh Mohammad Hamidi, a Shia cleric in Lal wa Sarjangal district of Ghor province, was arrested by the Taliban on Monday.
According to the sources, the cleric was released following public protests and on the condition that he would no longer engage in any religious or educational activities.
The sources added that Taliban forces raided Hamidi’s home in the Migrants Township area of Lal wa Sarjangal district this morning and arrested his son and six other relatives.
Sources also said that there is still no information about the whereabouts of Sheikh Mohammad Hamidi.
The arrests come as the Taliban have intensified pressure on Shia and Hazara communities in recent days. Mohammad Ali Akhlaqi, head of the High Shia Council, and several other members of the council are also reportedly being held in a private prison belonging to the Taliban’s Minister of Justice.
