The Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) has announced that since the Taliban takeover in 2021, around 300 journalists and media workers have been arrested or imprisoned on charges of failing to comply with the group’s strict media guidelines.
The center said in a statement published on Tuesday, September 29, that widespread restrictions have been imposed on media activities in Afghanistan during this period.
According to the statement, dozens of media outlets have also suspended their operations or shut down for various reasons amid increasing restrictions on their work.
The Afghanistan Journalists Center added that the restrictions imposed on the media have created greater difficulties for journalists and media workers in carrying out their activities.
The center also said on Monday that the public’s right to access information in the country has faced unprecedented suppression and has effectively been eliminated, adding that the Taliban have systematically restricted this right.
