Sources in Herat say Hayatullah Rohani, head of the Taliban’s Counter-Narcotics Department at the provincial police command, has been dismissed over allegations of selling drugs to an addiction treatment hospital.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Monday, October 5, that following an increase in complaints about his conduct and that of his associates at the addiction treatment hospital, a Taliban delegation from Kabul traveled to Herat to investigate the matter. Rohani was dismissed following the investigation.
The sources said the delegation found that individuals under Rohani’s command had taken money from some patients in exchange for providing drugs and had extorted them.
According to the sources, Rohani was dismissed after the complaints and supporting documents were presented. However, despite the available evidence, he has not been arrested so far.
The sources added that Rohani is considered close to Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban leader.
The sources said Rohani was expected to face investigation and prosecution over the allegations, but so far, he has only been removed from his position.
The sources also alleged that Rohani and people close to him were involved in other cases, including corruption and drug trafficking.
