The U.S. Department of Justice has announced that TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, have agreed to pay $400 million to settle a legal case with the U.S. government.
According to Agence France-Presse, on Friday, August 21, the case concerns allegations that TikTok violated U.S. federal laws protecting children’s privacy.
U.S. officials accused TikTok of failing to comply with legal requirements regarding the collection and use of personal information belonging to underage users.
The agreement comes as TikTok has faced increasing legal and political pressure in the United States in recent years over user privacy and data security.
