Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump this week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Axios reported early Monday, September 21, that Zelenskyy made the announcement following a phone call with Trump on Sunday.
According to the report, the meeting comes as the White House seeks to facilitate an agreement between Russia and Ukraine on reciprocal steps to reduce tensions and resume negotiations.
Meanwhile, fighting between Russia and Ukraine has intensified in recent days.
The meeting, which is expected to take place on Tuesday, comes days after Trump signed a bill imposing sanctions on Russia and approved the largest arms deal between the United States and Ukraine since he took office. Ukraine had been seeking both measures for months.
However, Zelenskyy said Ukraine is prepared to take “very serious steps” to reach an agreement with Russia to reduce tensions.
