Shamila Chaudhary and Colin Jackson, co-chairs of the Afghanistan War Commission, have announced that the U.S. Congress has extended the commission’s mandate for another year.
The commission said in a statement on Thursday, August 27, that the one-year extension will provide enough time to complete a comprehensive, independent, and accurate assessment of the 20-year U.S. war in Afghanistan.
According to the statement, the extension was approved by both chambers of the U.S. Congress, with support from members of both the Republican and Democratic parties.
The statement said that the commission’s investigation into the U.S. war in Afghanistan could provide important lessons for future American leaders about warfare and military interventions.
The Afghanistan War Commission was established in 2021 and tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of the United States’ two-decade war in Afghanistan.
