Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, has said that holding elections while Ukraine is facing Russia’s invasion would be extremely dangerous for the country.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on Sunday, August 23, that the Ukrainian president made the remarks in response to a call by Ukraine’s former defence minister to hold elections.
According to the report, Ukraine has suspended elections under martial law, as the country remains focused on defending itself against Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in 2022.
“I believe that in a war like this, elections as such are a huge risk. Elections right now are a tsunami for the country that will split Ukraine,” Zelensky said.
However, opposition politicians are calling for elections despite the fact that parts of Ukrainian territory remain under Russian occupation, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens have fled abroad, and Russian missile and drone attacks continue on a large scale.
