The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the UN Special Trust Fund, has installed 16 solar systems to provide electricity for urban water supply networks in three provinces of Afghanistan.
On Thursday, August 7, 2025, the organization announced on its X page that the solar systems had been installed in Kandahar, Balkh, and Paktia provinces, facilitating access to clean and safe water for thousands of people.
According to the organization, this project is part of the second phase of the ABADEI program, which aims to improve access to essential services amid Afghanistan’s challenging economic and climatic conditions.
The UNDP states that since the start of this phase, nearly 76,000 people have benefited from these services, with more than 38,000 of them being women.
This comes as many areas in Afghanistan continue to face severe shortages of clean water and adequate water supply infrastructure.
