The United Nations Human Rights Council has extended the mandate of Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, for another year.
Bennett confirmed the decision on Monday evening, October 5, in a post on X and thanked the UN Human Rights Council for extending his mandate.
Bennett said the resolution extending his mandate provides for an “enhanced interactive dialogue” in June 2027.
He added that the dialogue will focus on gender-related concerns in Afghanistan.
The UN Special Rapporteur also said that under the resolution, he has been tasked with preparing a study on the situation of “minorities” in Afghanistan and presenting it in September 2027.
The draft resolution on the human rights situation in Afghanistan was also adopted by the Human Rights Council without a vote.
