The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) says providing adequate shelter and access to essential services is crucial for families returning to Afghanistan.
The agency said in a post on its X account on Wednesday, October 21, that more action is needed to improve conditions for returning families.
UN-Habitat emphasized that returning to Afghanistan should offer an opportunity to begin a new life in their homeland, rather than mark the start of new hardships.
The statement comes after the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned of a growing risk of hunger in Afghanistan.
OCHA said around 16 million people in Afghanistan are facing food insecurity, with the figure expected to rise to approximately 19 million as winter approaches.
