UN Women in Afghanistan has expressed serious concern over the detention, arrest and threats against women and girls by the Taliban.
On Saturday, October 10, the organization said recent arrests and threats against women and girls had raised serious concerns, citing a report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
UNAMA had earlier reported that at least 52 women and one girl were arrested or detained in Kabul and Herat between July and September 2026.
According to UNAMA, the women were detained for not complying with the Taliban’s dress requirements and released after spending several hours in custody.
Reasons for the detentions included not wearing a chador, having some hair visible, wearing colorful headscarves, wearing makeup and appearing in public without a mahram, or male guardian.
