The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says it documented at least 29 cases of the detention and arrest of former members of Afghanistan’s defense and security forces and former government officials between April 1 and June 30.
The mission also documented five cases of ill-treatment and torture and eight cases of killings of former members of Afghanistan’s defense and security forces during this period.
UNAMA added that former members of Afghanistan’s forces and former government officials continue to face the risk of human rights violations following their forced return to the country.
The report cites the case of a former Afghan National Army officer who disappeared in Herat city on the same day he was forcibly returned to Afghanistan by Iranian authorities.
According to the report, the officer’s family has so far received no information about his fate or whereabouts.
