UNICEF

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that more than 39,000 children and their family members in Afghanistan have gained more reliable access to safe drinking water through the construction and rehabilitation of water supply systems.

In a report published on Thursday, October 22, the organization said the project was implemented with financial support from Korea and aims to assist communities vulnerable to climate change.

UNICEF said that, under the project, 19 deep wells, solar-powered water pumping systems, water storage tanks and water distribution networks have been constructed or rehabilitated.

According to the organization, these systems help families, schools and vulnerable communities secure more reliable access to safe water in the face of droughts, floods and other consequences of climate change.

The project is being implemented at a time when many citizens of Afghanistan, particularly those in remote areas, lack access to safe drinking water.
