The United Nations–affiliated Global Fund “Education Cannot Wait (ECW)” has declared that depriving girls of education is a blatant violation of the human rights of women and girls, exposing them to greater risks of violence, poverty, and exploitation.
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the organization released a report calling for the immediate return of girls in Afghanistan to schools and urged the international community to defend their right to education.
According to the organization, world leaders must intensify their efforts to reintegrate all girls in Afghanistan into the education system.
The report further emphasized that support for community-based education in Afghanistan must not be halted.
The organization stressed that investing in the education of girls in Afghanistan means ending injustice, reducing poverty, and building a better future for the coming generations.
Based on the report, with financial support from this fund, nearly 300,000 children in Afghanistan—54 percent of them girls—have so far gained access to safe and quality education.
Through an investment of more than $90 million, the fund has managed to expand girls’ education in deprived areas and provide programs for adolescents excluded from the formal education system.
Reports by international organizations indicate that over 2.2 million girls in Afghanistan are barred from continuing education beyond the primary level, and in total, up to seven million children have been kept out of school due to various restrictions.
Forecasts suggest that the ban on girls’ education could cost Afghanistan’s GDP more than $1.5 billion by 2030 and around $9.6 billion by 2066.
