An informed source told Axios that U.S. diplomats met with Houthi representatives at the U.S. Embassy in Oman last weekend and discussed tensions in the Red Sea.
The U.S. media outlet reported early Thursday, September 17, that the talks, coordinated with the Omani government, focused on maintaining the ceasefire between the United States and the Houthis and ensuring that the Bab al-Mandab Strait remains open.
According to the report, representatives from the U.S. Embassy attended the meeting, but the ambassador did not participate.
The source said Houthi representatives emphasized that their attacks target only Saudi vessels and pledged to allow other ships to pass freely through the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
This comes as fighting between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia has intensified in recent days.
