Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has called for increased pressure on the Taliban to respect human rights, saying that there is a “deafening silence” around the suffering of the people of Afghanistan.
The United Nations published Türk’s remarks on Wednesday, September 9, regarding the human rights situation in Afghanistan under Taliban control.
Türk said that the situation for many people in Afghanistan is moving from bad to worse, with the Taliban tightening and implementing repressive measures with each passing month.
“It seems the world has forgotten and abandoned the people of Afghanistan to a plight deepening by the day. The silence is deafening,” he said.
According to Türk, the systematic exclusion of women and girls from public life is an unacceptable human rights violation that the Taliban have normalized and institutionalized.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stressed that such restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan under Taliban control have no place in any society.
This comes as, following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan,
have been banned from work, education, and participation in public life, while the group has also imposed increasing pressure on all segments of society.
