Carl Skau, acting director of the World Food Programme (WFP), has said that life in Gaza remains “absolutely brutal” and dangerous, with United Nations teams recording around 50 Israeli attacks per day over the past week.
Al Jazeera reported early Tuesday, October 20, that the United Nations has suspended food assistance to 500,000 Palestinians in Gaza and 200,000 Palestinians in the West Bank due to severe funding shortages.According to the report, Skau said the WFP would now prioritize food distribution for those most in need.
The development comes after the Israeli military halted the entry of commercial goods, including food, into Gaza last week.
Speaking about the West Bank, Skau said an escalation in violent attacks by Israeli settlers had turned what was already a humanitarian and protection crisis “into a hunger crisis,” adding that food insecurity had more than doubled over the past three years.
He added that nearly one million Palestinians in the West Bank currently need food assistance.
Meanwhile, the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza over the past three years has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians living in the enclave.
