The United Nations has said that the need for adequate housing and shelter in Afghanistan has increased as the number of Afghan returnees continues to rise.
The UN said on Monday, October 5, that more than six million Afghans have returned to the country since late 2023, and more migrants are expected to return to Afghanistan in 2026.
The UN said current support is insufficient to meet the needs of returnees, who require adequate housing.
The UN has designated this year’s World Habitat Day theme as “Adequate Housing for All.”
World Habitat Day is observed annually on October 5. The UN established the day to draw greater attention to housing conditions, urban development and people’s living conditions around the world.
World Habitat Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1985 and was first observed in 1986.
