Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported early Monday, April 27, that the quake occurred at 5:23 a.m. local time in southern Hokkaido at a depth of 83 kilometers.
The agency initially estimated the magnitude at 6.1 but later revised it to 6.2.
Japanese officials said no tsunami warning has been issued, and assessments of possible damage are still underway.
The JMA also warned that the likelihood of similar earthquakes occurring in the region over the coming days and weeks remains high.
Hokkaido and other parts of Japan have experienced numerous earthquakes in the past, as the country lies along one of the most active seismic belts in the world.
