Sources say the Council of Afghan Diplomats has held meetings over the past two days in Brussels with representatives of Belgium’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Parliament, as well as the European Union’s foreign policy administration.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Tuesday, September 15, that the meetings took place following the recent visit by Taliban representatives to Brussels.
The sources added that the meetings stressed the need for a change in policy toward the Taliban.
Council members had previously said that the Taliban had shown no flexibility toward human rights and women’s rights over the past five years.
Following these diplomatic engagements, it appears that the European Union is at a stage of reviewing its policies toward the Taliban. However, it remains unclear what changes this process will bring.
The Council of Afghan Diplomats comprises ambassadors and consuls general who have had no contact with the Taliban over the past five years and have not followed the directives of the administration controlled by the group in Kabul.
