Arif Alvi, Pakistan’s former president, has described the declaration of emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the “final nail in the coffin of democracy.”
In a post on X on Monday, October 12, Alvi accused Islamabad of undermining democracy and removing the province’s elected government.
The former Pakistani president also accused the country’s government and security agencies of arresting and torturing elected representatives, abducting people and suppressing peaceful protests.
“Only the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had the right to remove their government, not unelected usurpers imposed by force of arms in Islamabad,” he said.
Alvi stressed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the people of Pakistan would continue their peaceful struggle and defend the country through democratic means.
This comes after Pakistan’s federal government declared a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, October 11, following approval by President Asif Ali Zardari.
