Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, has warned about increasing efforts to normalize relations with the Taliban, saying that the process would lead to legitimizing repression in Afghanistan.
Bennett said on Saturday, August 15, that despite growing interest among countries in normalizing relations with the Taliban, the reasons required to justify such a move have not changed.
He stressed that normalizing relations with the Taliban, which systematically repress more than half of the country’s population, would not help improve the situation, but would instead legitimize repression.
Bennett had previously also warned about the normalization of relations with the Taliban and its consequences for the human rights situation in Afghanistan.
