Rabab Fatima, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, has said that journalists play an essential role in strengthening dialogue, peace and good governance.

On Monday, November 2, marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, she called for measures to ensure journalists’ safety.

Fatima added that protecting journalists who have dedicated their lives to seeking the truth must be a priority in Afghanistan and around the world.

Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, journalists have faced censorship, threats, arrests and increasingly restrictive measures.
