The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have called for the restoration of the right to education for girls and women in Afghanistan.
The two UN agencies said in a joint report on Sunday, November 8, that more than half of primary school-age children in Afghanistan are deprived of formal education.
UNESCO and UNICEF warned that continued restrictions on education would deprive an entire generation of opportunities for learning and progress.
The two agencies stressed that barriers to education would also negatively affect Afghanistan’s future reconstruction and development.
Since the Taliban returned to power, more than 2.6 million girls have been barred from attending classes above the sixth grade.
