The administration based in eastern Libya announced late Wednesday that citizens of Iran and Afghanistan are prohibited from entering the country through all land, sea and air entry points.
Reuters reported early Thursday, October 29, that the decision was announced in a statement published on the administration’s official Facebook page.
According to the report, the move extends entry restrictions that the eastern Libyan administration imposed on nationals of four African countries in June.
However, the administration did not provide a reason for the decision.
“Entry into Libyan territory by citizens of Iran and Afghanistan through all land, air and sea entry points is prohibited,” the statement said.
It added that the Interior Ministry would be responsible for implementing the decision and deporting Iranian and Afghan nationals who do not have valid residence permits.
Since the fall of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, the country has become a transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty who seek to reach Europe across the Mediterranean Sea.
