U.S. President Donald Trump has urged voters in Michigan not to vote for Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim candidate for the U.S. Senate, while invoking the September 11 attacks.
Reuters reported early Monday, October 26, that Trump made the remarks at a campaign rally attended by his supporters.
According to the report, Trump linked El-Sayed to Muslim extremists and compared him to the perpetrators of the September 11 attacks.
Trump claimed that Democrats allow violent, anti-American terrorists to enter the United States.
“I am here to stop a jihadist and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood from becoming a United States senator,” he said.
If elected, El-Sayed would become the first Muslim to serve in the U.S. Senate.
El-Sayed has rejected the accusations. In a recent campaign advertisement, he defended his faith, saying, “Faith is something that has become very scarce in Washington.”
