Government data show that the death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has exceeded 5,000.
Reuters reported on Saturday, October 31, that more than 10,000 people have been infected since the outbreak was officially declared in May.
According to the report, authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have yet to find a way to contain the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history.
Delayed diagnosis, internal conflicts and severe pressure on healthcare services have allowed the virus to spread faster than in previous outbreaks.
Eight of the country’s 26 provinces have been affected, and many deaths have occurred outside healthcare facilities.
This year’s outbreak is the second-largest Ebola outbreak in the world. The largest occurred between 2014 and 2016, when more than 28,600 people were infected and over 11,000 died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
