Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey, says the United Nations is no longer capable of fulfilling its mission to maintain international peace and security and has failed to respond effectively to wars and crises around the world.
The United Nations reported on Wednesday, September 23, that Erdogan said the organization was established 81 years ago to maintain international peace and security but is now “unable to do so.”
Erdogan said that to see the UN’s failure to achieve its objectives, it is enough to look at the past 12 months, during which, he said, hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives.
He said the period was one of the bloodiest in the past 30 years, with more than 60 conflicts and wars taking place in different parts of the world, from Gaza and Ukraine to Iran and Lebanon.
Erdogan added that those who have placed their hopes in the United Nations in Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan and other crisis-hit areas have been “deeply disappointed.”
The Turkish president expressed particular concern over the situation of Palestinians, saying that the injustices faced by people in Gaza and the West Bank “deeply wound the conscience of humanity.”
