Former Paraguayan President Santiago Peña has been arrested in connection with the collapse of digital bank Ueno and allegations of embezzlement involving the bank.
TASS reported on Friday, November 6, that police arrested Peña under a warrant issued by the prosecutor’s office.
According to the report, the accounts of around three million customers were frozen after Paraguay’s central bank placed Ueno under the management of external administrators on November 3.
Paraguay has a population of around seven million, meaning the freezing of accounts belonging to three million Ueno customers has affected a significant portion of the country’s population.
Peña resigned on Thursday, November 5, following the collapse of Ueno Bank.
