France has announced that it will hold talks with Taliban officials about returning Afghan migrants who are residing in the country illegally.
Laurent Nuñez, France’s interior minister, said on Monday, November 2, that he was seeking to arrange the return of some Afghans whose residency status was irregular.
Nuñez said some of these individuals could pose a threat to public order and described their return as one of his priorities.
Meanwhile, Léa Balage El Mariky, a representative of France’s Green Party, accused the government of beginning to normalize relations with the Taliban through this move.
She described the Taliban as a group that has committed crimes against humanity by imposing restrictions on women and girls.
In September, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights criticized the international community’s silence over Afghanistan’s human rights crisis and called for an end to the forced return of migrants.
