United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres says that 800 million people around the world are living in extreme poverty.
Guterres wrote on X on Saturday, May 30, that the situation of these people has worsened due to conflicts, the climate crisis, growing inequalities, and heavy debt burdens.
The UN secretary-general stressed the need to build economies that prioritize people.
“We must build economies that put people first and continue efforts to end poverty,” he said.
Guterres also called for continued global efforts to reduce and eliminate poverty.
The UN secretary-general had previously stated that nearly three billion people are living in inadequate housing conditions.
