Antonio Guterres, the United Nations secretary-general, has expressed concern over persistent hunger worldwide, saying that despite decades of progress, the global food system continues to face serious challenges.
In a post on X on Monday, October 19, Guterres said global hunger remains at an unacceptable level.
He stressed that every person has the right to access food and that countries must take practical steps to ensure everyone has access to sufficient and nutritious food.
“Let us turn our shared commitments into concrete action and build sustainable, healthy and equitable food systems for all,” he added.
The remarks come after the United Nations reported an increase in food insecurity and malnutrition in Afghanistan.
On Thursday, October 15, the organization announced that acute malnutrition and hunger in Afghanistan had reached their highest levels, with 15.9 million people facing acute food insecurity across the country.
