António Guterres has said that during his visit to Haiti, he witnessed a large-scale humanitarian crisis caused by ongoing insecurity in the country.
Writing on X on Wednesday, June 17, Guterres said that access to communities in need of assistance has become severely restricted and that security challenges continue to hamper humanitarian efforts.
He added that despite these difficulties, the humanitarian air service operated by the World Food Programme (WFP-UNHAS) serves as a “lifeline,” supporting humanitarian operations in various parts of the world every day.
The UN secretary-general also expressed appreciation for humanitarian workers and partner organizations in Haiti, noting that they continue their work despite significant risks and challenges.
Haiti has faced worsening security and humanitarian crises in recent years, with international organizations repeatedly warning about the deteriorating situation and its impact on the population.
