UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says Pakistan has played an important and decisive role in creating conditions for dialogue between the United States and Iran.
Guterres said on Tuesday, October 6, that Pakistan’s efforts had helped lead to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 17, the subsequent ceasefire, and the establishment of a framework for further negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Guterres also expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s role at the United Nations Security Council and its support for dialogue, mediation and diplomacy.
He added that Pakistan has been one of the long-standing contributors to UN peacekeeping operations and expressed appreciation for more than 180 Pakistani peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.
The remarks come as tensions between the United States and Iran continue despite Pakistan’s efforts, with the two countries yet to reach a final agreement.
