The United Nations Secretary-General has said that poverty is an “insult” to human dignity and a denial of human rights, and that it must be eradicated through appropriate measures.
On Saturday, October 17, António Guterres wrote on X that the resources and knowledge needed to eradicate poverty worldwide are available, but the necessary political will and investments must be mobilised to achieve this goal.
He stressed that the inequalities and injustices that perpetuate poverty must be addressed and tackled.
The UN Secretary-General added that creating the conditions for a life free from poverty requires collective action, resource mobilisation and political will so that everyone can live with dignity.
These remarks come as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) stated in their latest report that 1.2 billion people across 108 countries are experiencing acute multidimensional poverty.
