Sources in Herat say that Morteza Karimi, a teenager who was wounded during recent protests in the city after allegedly being shot by Taliban fighters, died on Tuesday.
Sources told The Hasht-e Subh Daily on Tuesday, June 16, that following Karimi’s injury, three private clinics refused to treat his wounds due to alleged threats from the Taliban.
According to the sources, two bullets struck his leg. They added that a government hospital admitted him only after significant delays.
Sources further said that excessive blood loss and delays in treatment had caused his kidneys to fail.
According to the sources, the teenager will be buried in the public cemetery of Kamar-e Kalagh on the outskirts of Herat.
The sources also said that, amid concerns over possible public gatherings following his death, the Taliban have deployed additional forces to the Jebrail area of Herat.
The protests erupted after several women in Herat were reportedly detained by the Taliban on charges of “improper hijab.” Residents of the Jebrail area later staged demonstrations, which were forcefully dispersed by the Taliban.
