Herat Residents Raise Concerns Over Rising Insecurity and Targeted Killings

Several residents of Herat have complained about rising insecurity and the lack of effective monitoring of the security situation in the city, saying that targeted killings and disappearances carried out by kidnappers have increased in recent months.

Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Tuesday, August 18, that the security situation in Herat is becoming increasingly concerning and that, in some cases, people first disappear and their bodies are found after some time.

They say kidnappers also demand money from the victims’ families.

A resident of Herat said that one of his family members was kidnapped by unidentified individuals while going to school, and that the family managed to find the person after searching and tracking them down.

Such incidents have increased families’ concerns, and many people fear for the safety of their family members, particularly children and teenagers, when they leave home.

A few days ago, the dismembered body of a 25-year-old man was also found in Herat after he had been missing for about a month. The individuals involved in the kidnapping fled to Iran following the incident.

Residents of Herat are calling on the Taliban to take more serious measures to prevent kidnappings, targeted killings, and disappearances, and to identify and arrest those responsible for such incidents.
