Herat’s Female-Headed Households Face Growing Economic Hardship Amid Job Shortages

Several women who are the sole providers for their families in Herat say they are facing severe economic hardship due to increasing restrictions and the lack of employment opportunities for women.

Some women told Hasht-e Subh Daily on Thursday, August 20, that while Afghanistan’s Independence Day is being celebrated, women have been deprived of their rights, including the right to work and achieve financial independence.

They said restrictions on women’s employment and activities have taken away their income-generating opportunities, leaving many female heads of households unable to cover their living expenses and meet their children’s basic needs.

The continued restrictions and lack of job opportunities have further worsened the economic situation of female-headed households.

They are calling for employment and income-generating opportunities so they can support their families without depending on others.

The women in Herat emphasized that true independence for them does not simply mean holding ceremonies and commemorating a particular day, but rather having the freedom to work, earn an income, and participate in society.
