Three women journalists have accused Indian police officers of sexually harassing them during street protests in New Delhi, the country’s capital.
BBC World Service reported on Sunday night, October 4, that the allegations were made on Saturday after police forces detained dozens of young people who were demanding the resignation of the chief election commissioner.
According to the report, Delhi Police said a complaint had been received by the New Delhi police station and that the case had been referred to the Crime Branch for a “fair and impartial” investigation.
On Sunday, thousands of protesters gathered for a third consecutive day in the cities of Delhi and Mumbai, calling for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar over widespread changes to voter lists.
The women journalists reportedly alleged that some police officers had engaged in inappropriate physical contact.
Meanwhile, the Press Club of India expressed “shock and deep regret” over the treatment of journalists and called for immediate action regarding the complaints against the police officers.
