Arsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has called for talks on the Strait of Hormuz to resume amid growing threats to maritime shipping.
Al Jazeera reported early Wednesday, September 23, that discussions on maritime shipping are underway on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the report, the IMO secretary-general said the discussions at the United Nations represent a renewed start for diplomacy.
Dominguez said: “We are ready to take any necessary measures, including operational measures, to resume transit through the Strait of Hormuz. However, this requires the strait to be safe.”
He said the more shipping is targeted around the world, the greater the problems and difficulties that will be created for people everywhere.
Meanwhile, in addition to the Strait of Hormuz, tensions and fighting between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia have also disrupted shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
