Reports indicate that Iranian border guards fired upon a group of Afghan asylum seekers, resulting in the injury of eight individuals.
On Wednesday, March 6th, sources revealed that the incident occurred in the Saravan district of Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province. The asylum seekers, hailing from Herat province in Afghanistan, were attempting to enter Iran through clandestine means when they were met with gunfire from Iranian border guards.
The escalating conflict in Afghanistan, particularly with the Taliban’s advancement, has driven many Afghans to seek refuge in neighboring countries like Iran and Pakistan. However, the journey is fraught with challenges, both economic and security-related, prompting individuals to resort to illegal border crossings.
To deter unauthorized entry, Iran has implemented stringent measures, including the deployment of minefields along its border areas. Despite these efforts, incidents like the recent shooting highlight the perilous conditions faced by asylum seekers seeking safety beyond Afghanistan’s borders.
