Iraq’s Ministry of Justice has announced that several prisoners affiliated with the Islamic State group (ISIS) have been transferred from prisons in Syria to Iraq.
According to a report published Monday night, February 16, by Alsumaria News, an official document released by the ministry states that the detainees include citizens of several countries who have been transferred to Iraq to complete judicial proceedings and serve their sentences.
Among the ISIS members are 25 Afghan nationals.
No further details have been released regarding their identities, previous places of detention, or legal status.
While the Taliban, following their return to power, claim to have ensured security and contained ISIS in Afghanistan, the presence of Afghan nationals among ISIS prisoners abroad continues to underscore concerns about the group’s cross-border networks.
