Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, has announced that her government has suspended the renewal of its defense cooperation agreement with Israel.
Speaking on Tuesday, April 14, during a visit to the northern city of Verona, Meloni said that, given the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel.
This decision was taken after Israel reportedly issued a warning shot at Italian forces deployed in Lebanon under a United Nations mission last week.
The Italy–Israel defense agreement, signed in 2003 and implemented in 2006, outlines cooperation between the two countries in defense capabilities, military training, and the transfer of military equipment.
Under the agreement, it is automatically renewed every five years unless one of the parties decides to cancel it.
