Kidnappings on the Rise in Kandahar as Families Fear for Children’s Safety

A busy road in Kandahar

Local sources in Kandahar say kidnappings have increased in the province, raising concerns among residents, particularly families worried about their children’s safety.

Speaking to the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Wednesday, October 21, sources said that alongside an increase in thefts and other crimes, kidnappers have been abducting children and adults from various parts of Kandahar city and demanding money from their families in exchange for their release.

According to the sources, the rise in such incidents has disrupted people’s daily lives, with many families afraid to let their children leave home alone for fear of abduction.

Meanwhile, Taliban officials in Kandahar have also acknowledged an increase in kidnappings in the province.

The Taliban’s Kandahar police command announced that three people had been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a child named Miwand and demanding money from his family in exchange for his release.

These concerns come amid Afghanistan’s ongoing economic difficulties, which sources say are among the factors driving some people to commit crimes.
