Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, has said that for many patients in remote areas of Bamiyan province, donkeys are sometimes the only means of reaching healthcare facilities because of limited access to transportation.
In a post on X on Tuesday, October 13, the organization said a pregnant woman had travelled for more than four hours by donkey to reach a healthcare facility supported by MSF in the Bagak Valley of Bamiyan province to give birth.
MSF said the woman would have to travel the same long route by donkey to return home after giving birth.
According to the organization, donkeys are sometimes the only means of accessing healthcare for patients in remote parts of Bamiyan, where transportation is difficult to obtain.
Meanwhile, since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, access to healthcare for women, particularly pregnant women, has become increasingly difficult due to the group’s widespread restrictions and the collapse of the country’s healthcare system.
